India, like many other countries, treats self-employed individuals or contractors and full-time employees differently. Misclassification of contractors in India may lead to fines and penalties for the offending company.
Employing in India
Under the Constitution of India, labour falls within the concurrent list giving power to both the Central and the respective State Government to legislate on such items, with the residual law-making powers vesting with the Centre.
This has resulted in a plethora of central and state laws related to wages, employment, industrial relations, social security, etc. being enacted to protect the interests of employees and to increase employment opportunities. The following are only guidelines in the broadest sense, and professional legal services are recommended when employing in India.
Minimum Wage
The minimum wage is stipulated by law, but varies state-by-state and the nature of employment. For Area A (covering major metropolitan areas e.g. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore), for unskilled workers, the minimum wage is Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). For semi-skilled workers, the minimum wage is Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month). For skilled workers and clerical positions (without arms) the minimum wage is Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month); and for highly Skilled Workers and those in watch and ward roles carrying arms, the minimum wage is Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).
Payroll Cycle
For customers of Remote, all employee payments will be made in equal monthly instalments on or before the last working day of each calendar month, payable in arrears.
Onboarding Time

Our team ensures your employees are onboarded and paid as quickly as possible while keeping your business compliant with all local employment legislation. The minimum onboarding time begins after the employee submits all required information onto the Remote platform. The onboarding timeline is also dependent upon registration with local authorities.
For all non-nationals of the country of employment, the Right to Work assessment (if applicable) will add three extra days to the total time to onboard. There may be extra time required if we need to follow-up on the right to work assessment.
Please note, payroll cut-off dates can impact the actual first day of employment. Remote has a payroll cut-off date of the 10th of the month unless otherwise specified.
